York School of Dance was established to offer high quality dance training to students of all levels. Emphasis is placed on dance and music appreciation with a strong focus on performance. Students are encouraged to explore dance as a journey, not only as a set discipline. You will find descriptions of our current dance programmes below:
Specially designed for preschoolers as an introduction to the concepts of dance including: primary dance positions, steps, and rhythms. Dancers explore different music dynamics, freestyle improvisational dance, and set exercises to strengthen muscles, develop proper posture and coordination. (Available for 3-5 yrs.)
Ballet for Tots
Preschoolers enjoy learning the basics of dance through the guidance of both dance teachers and parents/caregivers. Students will explore ballet technique and free movement through imagination, storytelling and improvisation. (Available for 2-3 yrs.)
Ballet
Pliés, Jétè, Piroette! Drawing from the English and Italian schools of ballet, this program offers students a comprehensive ballet syllabus. Dancing to classical ballet and contemporary music, teaches the dancer about style and emotive expression. Combinations are introduced and develop in complexity throughout the year. (Available for 6-9 yrs.)
Jazz
Leap, Jump, Slide! Jazz is an upbeat style of dance that is often seen on stage in productions on Broadway. Dancers learn a comprehensive set of steps throughout the year and incorporate them into combinations. We dance to fun pop music and other songs that the students recognize and enjoy. (Available for 4-12 yrs.)
Hip Hop
Pop, Break, Stamp! Hip Hop is an urban style of dance that is seen in music videos and street dancing. A favorite for the dancers, this class incorporates funky dance moves and attitude. This class is incorporated with Jazz to maintain technique and flexibility. (Available for 7-12 yrs.)
